Joseph L. Favela
was born in Los Mochis Sinaloa, Mexico. He entered the U.S. at
Nogales, AZ as a three-year old on foot with his parents.
Eighteen years later, although he was not yet a U.S. citizen, Joseph
was drafted into the U.S. Army at Phoenix, AZ on 1 December 1942.
His eligibility for the draft came after Mexico signed on as an ally
and therefore citizens of each country could be drafted no matter
which nation they resided in.
Pvt Favela entered basic training at Camp Roberts CA and while there
volunteered for parachutist duty. Sent to Ft Benning, Joe
completed jump school and demolition training and was then
transferred on 8 August 1943 from Ft Benning's Parachute School to
Hq Hq, 508th which was posted to Camp Mackall at that time..
