Corp.
John R. Montague, who was a German prisoner of war for 11 months at
Stalag 4B, south of Dresden, Germany. has returned to the home of
his parents, Mr.. and Mrs. C. W. Montague, 1514 Jefferson st.,
following his discharge from the army Nov 9 at Ft. Benning, Ga.
A graduate of the military academy at Onaiga, IL, Corp., Montague
entered service in 1942. He was a member of the 508th
paratroop regiment and was taken prisoner in Normandy on D-Day,
being released May 8, 1945.Only 918 men out of the 2,056 who jumped
over Normandy returned to their base in England.
Since returning to the United States from Germany, he was stationed
at Ft. Sam Houston, Tex., and then at Ft Benning, Ga., where he was
a clerk typist in the payroll department.
Corp.. Montague's decorations include the combat infantryman badge,
rifle and carbine marksmanship medals, light machine gun experts
medal, World War II victory medal , American Theatre ribbon,
European-African-Middle East ribbon with one star, good conduct
medal, distinguished unit badge with one cluster and the purple
heart
