GOING BACK TO CIVILIAN LIFE
As members, both male and female, of all branches of the uniformed services  began to filter out of the theatres of operations and descend on separation centers in droves, there were dozens of questions to be asked by each of them.  Questions that would be repeated over and over.
Anticipating that fact, the government prepared a facts review in a handy 3 inch x 5 inch booklet, a size that was easily put into a shirt pocket for ready reference.
The cover's background was produced in the popular herringbone pattern often seen in men's suits.  Although no one had one to wear as yet, the look of that civilian suit material must have had a comforting feel about it.  To add to the reality check that civilian life really did look straight ahead, the suit-like cover was adorned with the Discharge Emblem, the "Ruptured Duck"; it became fondly know.  The emblem was provided if the forms of a cloth patch as well as a lapel button.
All service personnel returning from the war were issued the lapel button as it was to be worn on their civilian attire, as the 'suit' material here illustrated.  The cloth patch was to be sewn on the uniform and  was only issued to those personnel who were being discharged.  The patch provided visible guarantee that the uniform wearer was authorized to continue wearing the uniform until he/she reached home and acquired civilian attire.

NOTE:  This booklet was the property of SSgt Harry Evans, Hq Hq and was kindly loaned to us by his son, Larry.  of special interest are pages 78 through 80 as they have personal entries made by the book's owner regarding his service career including his note under "SERVICE WOUNDS" where he wrote "N.A. (Thank God)".
