508th Parachute Infantry Regiment
82nd Airborne Division
Dear Friends:
It is indeed a true pleasure to welcome the members of
the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment along with their friends and
family members to my wonderful hometown of Cody, Wyoming. You are going
to enjoy spending time there.
Since its early days as the 82nd Infantry Division
when Sergeant Alvin York won the Medal of Honor in France during World
War I, the exploits of the All-American Division have been legendary.
The famous airborne assault on Saint Mere-Eglise during the invasion of
Normandy distinguished the 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment and the 82nd
Airborne Division as the world's greatest fighting force. Whether it was
peacekeeping duty in the Dominican Republic, or combat in Vietnam,
Grenada, Panama or Saudi Arabia, the paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne
Division have always brought great honor to themselves and their
country. Today, the 82nd remains ready to deploy to any trouble spot in
18 hours.
Paratroopers of the 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment of
the 82nd Airborne Division are a very special breed. They volunteer
twice — once for military service and again for airborne training. Their
bravery and willingness to sacrifice separate them from the rest. They
are the best of the bunch!
As a veteran of the Second Armored Division, "Hell on
Wheels," I am a bit partial to armored personnel carriers. But my MOS
was infantry so I have a special place in my heart for the infantryman.
This is a tune to renew old friendships and to reflect
on past glories. Your great service and your many sacrifices have made
all of you truly worthy of the title "All-America."
With best personal regards to you, Ted, and to all
your paratrooper buddies.
Sincerely,
Alan K. Simpson
