TUESDAY, JUNE 1, 2004 MALMADY, BELGIUM - MASSACRE MEMORIAL
On 17 December 1944, at this small road junction, some 42 Americans were captured and then shot. The Germans responsible for the "Malmady Massacre" as it became known were tried at the Nuremberg Trials. The event has been the topic of at least two movies. Saints and Soldiers [2003] is touted as an action packed story based on the historical event . The Snow Fieldearned theBest Director award for Peter Coston. Its primary theme was of faith contending with fear in the face of total war.
Malmady Park occupies one corner at two intersecting roads. The massacre itself took place in the vicinity of the trees [center] across the road
Memorial Wall contains individually carved stones with the name of each of the deceased men
Name Plates attached to the stone wall memorialize each of the massacre victims
Altar setting enables memorial services to be held
