NORMANDY - STE MERE EGLISE (5 of 6)


Duck
best known by it's G.I. nickname which came from the official designation of DUKW, meaning:
D = 1942 model year,
U = Amphibian
K = All wheel drive
W = Dual rear axles

Duckling?
based on the Willys MB and Ford GPW Jeep design, this amphibian was called a GPA, which stands for:
G = Government
P= 80 inch wheelbase
A = Amphibian
Ford was the only builder and between 1942 and 1943, the only years they were built, produced approximately 12,778.

Rare Cushman
Airborne scooter model 53, designed to be dropped by parachute, but most served as messenger vehicles

Rare Pair
messenger motorcycle, probably a Harley Davidson, and a Navy jeep

Saddle Bags
used by messengers on the large motorcycle enabled carrying more items and at faster speeds

Motorcycle Gaggle
including two Nortons, one with sidecar, a Harley-Davidson with side-shift  and two Ariels.  Note the Ariel headlamps are fitted with blackout shields

Jeeps
began arriving by the dozens

are seen here but all are configured differently

Classic Cars
a line of vintage vehicles, the first being an Austin, also toured the Norman countryside

Kübelwagen
(short for Kübelsitzwagen, meaning "bucket/tub car") built by VW and designed by Ferdinand Porsche
