MIG-15 "Fagot"
(NATO reporting name for the MIG-15)
outclassed straight-winged U.S.
F-80 Shooting Star and F-84 Thunderjet fighters.
Things changed after the swept-wing F-86 was introduced. The MIG had a better
thrust-to-weight ratio and a higher ceiling but F-86
pilot skills made the difference with losses of 78 aircraft compared to 792
MIG-15s that were downed
Grumman TBF Avenger (TBM if built by General Motors)
had three crew members: pilot, turret gunner and
radioman/bombardier/ventral gunner. Future American President George H.
W. Bush, was shot down while flying a TBM Avenger in 1944. Famous actor
Paul Newman served as a rear gunner after failing pilot training due to
color blindness
"Widow Maker" the P-38 Lightning was a tough-to-fly night fighter. It's unique
design was nicknamed "fork-tailed devil"
by the Luftwaffe and "two planes, one pilot" by the Japanese
Waco EGC-8 designed as "executive transports" with custom cabins. Built
in 1938, it had a 320 hp Wright R-760-E2 engine andt probably saw
military service

first saw action with the Fifth Air Force in the Southwest Pacific
theater, A-26s entered Europe with the Ninth Air Force in late September

"Gooney Bird" shown in civil livery, the C-47/DC-3 is perhaps the most famous
and well-loved aircraft in history. At least one remains in active
commercial use in Canada

speed similar to a single-seat fighter and was comparable to the German
Junkers Ju-88
Republic F-84 Thunderjet was the Air Force's primary strike aircraft during the Korean War
and was the first aircraft to fly with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds
demonstration team.
