Major Delamater
Is Given Bronze
Star In Germany
WITH 508TH PARACHUTE INFANTRY REGT.,
Frankfurt-On-Main, Germany, July 6 --- Major
Benjamin F. Delamater, III, has been awarded the
Bronze Star Medal, Oak Leaf Cluster, for heroic
conduct while serving with the 508th Parachute
Infantry Regiment during the Ardennes Campaign.
Major Delamater is the son of Col B. F. Delamater of Camp Hood,
Texas. He came to the "Red Devil" Regiment in
March of 1943 and since then has been in three
campaigns with them. During the Normandy
Invasion and the surprise assault in Holland he
served as First Battalion Executive Officer.
He has since distinguished himself on many occasions. In his
latest heroic action, according to his citation
accompanying the award, "he remained behind in
command of a small covering force, which was to
fight a rearguard action while the balance of the
unit was taking up new defensive lines.
"The enemy succeeded in overrunning several of the covering
positions. Faced with the possibility of being
cut off, he fell doggedly back and joined with
another force.
"Remaining until the last possible moment and displaying the
greatest of personal courage and coolness, he
achieved a great success in his task in the face of
overwhelming odds.
"His achievement is indicative of his ability and the service he
has constantly rendered."
