Pvt Frank "Speck" Haddy,
paratrooper, son of Mr. and Mrs.. Mike Haddy, 525 Carolina S. E., has been
awarded the bronze star medal - for heroic conduct with the 82nd airborne
division, which spearheaded the invasion in France, landing by parachute and
glider several hours before H-hour on D-day, according to announcement from
headquarters of the division.
Five hundred and seventeen medals were awarded to officers and
enlisted men of the division and distributed as follows: 317 bronze stars
for heroic conduct; 2 oak leaf clusters to the bronze star; 112 silver
stars; 3 oak leaf clusters to the silver star; 63 bronze stars for
meritorious service; and 20 soldiers medals.
The division, commanded by Maj. Gen. Matthew B. Ridgeway, had
captured the important junction of Ste. Mere Eglise 3 hours before the sea
forces began landing, according to the story sent from headquarters.
Pvt Haddy, according to an earlier story, received here, was
wounded in France on July 25. He had written his parents from France
that most of the weapons they were using were those captured from the
Germans there. Haddy has been overseas since last December. |
