AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL

      Under the provisions of AR 600-45, as amended, and pursuant to authority contained in letter 200.6 (AG) Headquarters XVIII Corps Airborne, dated 31 August 1944, the following named individuals are awarded the Bronze Star Medal:

      ELEK HARTMAN, 15329231 Private, 508th Parachute Infantry, For heroic conduct in action on 20 September 1944 at ***, GERMANY.  Private HARTMAN , Radio Operator, Company "B", demonstrated great personal courage by remaining in his position during a strong counter-attack by the enemy while his company was withdrawing.  He directed punishing artillery fire upon the Germans who approached within 75 yards of his position.  His heroic actions caused heavy casualties to the enemy and allowed his company to take up new defensive positions.  His devotion to duty reflect the highest credit to him and the service.  Entered military service from CLEVELAND, OHIO.
