PVT GARRET T. HUGHES
BRONZE STAR MEDAL AWARD

FATHER GETS SON'S MEDAL
AWARDED POSTHUMOUSLY

   Fort Bragg.--- George W. Hughes of Hope Mills recently received from Brigadier General John T. Kennedy, commanding general of Fort Bragg, the Bronze Star awarded posthumously to his son, Pvt Garrett T. Hughes, who was 'killed in action in Europe while serving with the 82nd Airborne division. Private Hughes was decorated for heroic conduct in action against the enemy on October 2, 1944. During a counterattack by a company of his unit, he obtained prisoners and information and documents that were vital to this and subsequent operations. He killed by enemy artillery fire while preparing to return to the company.
