Pfc Karmitski moved
well in front of his squad to prevent the enemy
crossing the Salm river prior to the demolishing of
the highway bridge. Wit rifle and grenades, he
drove the enemy back until the bridge was blown. |

Pfc Karmitski's squad
was one of the two squads directly in front of the
bridge, with the mission of preventing enemy troops
from crossing it or the Salm river in that sector. |

At the time certain
enemy reconnaissance elements reached the river, the
bridge had not yet been blown, and Pfc Pfc Karmitski
moved forward to ner the bridge to, alone, prevent
the enemy crossing. He was so close to the
bridge that upon demolition he was wounded by flying
debris. |

Pfc Karmitski was
wounded, but continued to fight till ordered to the
rear for treatment. |

Through his unselfish
devotion to duty and aggressive action, Pfc
Karmitski prevented some or all of the enemy from
crossing the Salm river prior to destruction of the
bridge. |

NOTES: Two addenda
were added: "awarded B.S." - and -

Karmitski's name according to National Archive
enlistment records is properly spelled as
"Karmitzski".
CONCLUSION: Pfc Karmitzski
received the Bronze Star Medal on three occasions.
Since the handwritten entry indicates that he had
received the B.S. earlier, he received the first Oak
Leaf Custer based on this
