Sgt. Mullen, on an
outpost with two other men, prevented the enemy from
setting up forward observation and outpost in the
vicinity of his platoons position, killing five of
the enemy. |

Sgt Mullen, with two
other men, had been assigned of outposting in front
of hid platoon. At this time, the enemy
besides try to set up their own outposts in this
area, were attempting to establish observation poets
and to infiltrate the area. |

After placing his men
in separate foxholes so as to form a V defensive
position with himself as the point in an effort to
provide less of a target to enemy mortar and
artillery fire. Sgt Mullen fought off numerous
attempts by the enemy to establish these positions.
At times he would move to one flank or the other,
under his mens covering fire to engage and repell
[sic] enemy attempts to infiltrate and patrolling.
During this period of time he personally killed five
of the enemy. |

Sgt, Mullen was
wounded in this action, but after receiving
treatment, insisted on returning to his outpost
although he could hardly walk. |

Sgt Mullen's
initiative and courage, plus his intensely
aggressive action, served as an example that all of
his men attempted to emulate. He also denied
the enemy close observation of our position. |
