weapons, at almost point blank range, broke through
a German ambush, and organized and directed a group
of men in successfully rescuing his platoon leader,
assistant platoon leader, and two men from the enemy
ambush. |

Pvt Schmalz had
volunteered for a daylight reconnaissance mission,
to find enemy strength and disposition, prior to the
launching of an attack through this area. |

After an advance into
enemy territory this patrol was ambushed by the
enemy, and was receiving fire, at very short
range, of many automatic weapons and rifles.
Though completely surrounded, Pvt Schmalz
voluntarily crawled through the ring of enemy, to
friendly troops, organized them and drove the enemy
off, enabling the two officers and two men to
withdraw to safety. |
