DONALD JAKEWAY RECEIVES LEGION OF HONOR

The Newark Advocate. Newark, OH, Tuesday, November 11, 2010, Page 4

   JAKEWAY RECEIVES
KNIGHT OF THE LEGION
OF HONOR MEDAL

Glen Cunningham is not the first veteran from Licking County to be inducted into the Ohio Veterans of Fame.  There have been many.
In 2009, Donald Jakeway, of Johnstown. was inducted for his community service to the Johnston area. He was the American Legion Post 254 Veteran of the Year in 2004 and received the Inscho-Beasley-Mayfield Licking County Veteran of the Year in 2008.
Earlier this month, Jakeway was one of nine Ohio World War II veterans

who received the Knight of the Legion of Honor Medal for his part in fighting to

liberate France.  The medal, created by Napoleon, is the highest honor the French Government has for people who are not citizens of France.
Jakeway enlisted at the age of 19 in November 1942 as a sergeant on the 508th Parachute Infantry of the 82nd Airborne Division.  From June to July 1944, he participated in the Normandy, Northern France, and Germany campaigns.
He was wounded in France on Sept. 21, 1944 and Jan. 31, 1945.
Gov. Ted Strickland hosted the award ceremony Friday in the Ohio statehouse Rotunda.
