THE MILITARY MEDAL
In the
vicinity of Reharmont, Belgium, on 25 December 1944, Private KIRK, a
machine gunner, distinguished himself against the enemy. When
fifty German riflemen, supported by half-tracks and numerous automatic
weapons, broke through a roadblock set up by his company., Private KIRK
engaged them with his machine gun from an exposed position on the road
and inflicted heavy casualties upon enemy personnel and destroyed much
equipment. He refused to withdraw in the face of tremendous odds
and maintained a constant deadly fire, forcing the enemy to retreat.
By his courageous determination, Private KIRK singlehandedly routed a
formidable enemy counterattack.
