HEADQUARTERS XVIII CORPS (AIRBORNE)
APO 2109, United States Army
CITATION FOR THE
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS
First Lieutenant George D. Lamm,
O-1287020, Infantry, while serving with the Army of the United States,
distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism in connection with military
operations in Belgium on 22 December 1944. When demolition charges failed to
destroy two bridges across the Salm River, Lieutenant Lamm led continuous
attacks which held the enemy back while the bridges were prepared again.
Although one bridge had been successfully destroyed the other was still
usable. Realizing that this bridge must be completely destroyed, Lieutenant
Lamm completely disregarding personal safety, laid the charges and detonated
them in the face of heavy enemy fire. The extraordinary heroism and
courageous actions of Lieutenant Lamm reflect great credit upon himself and
are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
