Jim Blue, himself a Pfc at the time, later wrote "Jim
Benton received approximately seventeen MG bullet wounds in the right
arm, side and leg. He was transported to the hospital by Dr. C.
Tim Hom (sp? ) on a 3-wheel bicycle. He did not return to the unit.
[Note: Dr. Hom was a local citizen]"
This event corresponds with a
Hq 1st Morning Report entry dated 30 Sep 44 which states "fr dy to
slightly wounded in action to abs sk (hosp unknown) LD relvd fr asgmt to
atchd unasgnd per Cir 69 ETOUSA (battle casualty) 18 Sept 44".
The fact that Benton did not
return to the unit is also confirmed by a Hq 1st Morning Report dated 29
Nov 44 stating "fr atchd unasgd abs sk (hosp unknown) LD to trfd to
Prcht Repl Regt, The Prcht School Ft Benning Ga 10 Nov 44 (battle
casualty)".
In short, Benton received a
horrific number of wounds from machine gun fire and was evacuated to a
field hospital, perhaps later ending up in England. After two
months of treatment he was deemed fit to travel and sent to the hospital
at Fort Benning for further treatment. |
