			E      On 4 July 1944,
in an attack on Hill 95, near La Haye du Puits, France, my platoon was
leading the attack.  I was seriously wounded, and bleeding
heavily when Capt. Axelrod came forward to give me treatment.
Although my position was with the advance element, in spite of the
fact that the artillery fire was intense and close range direct
fire, the danger from sniper fire and automatic weapons being great,
Capt. Axelrod stopped the bleeding and gave me plasma, with complete
disregard for his own safety.  When shells would fall close by,
he shielded me with his own body, and under the above conditions, he
personally directed my evacuation.      His personal
bravery was an inspiration to the men, and gave them confidence
because they knew that they would receive prompt, efficient
attention should they be wounded.  Whenever heroic conduct is
the topic for conversation, Capt. Axelrod's conduct in many
instances is never left out. /s/
