Gets Hero Star
Word has been received here of the awarding of the silver star
for gallantry in action to Sgt Chick Eitelman, son of Mrs. Jennie C.
Eitelman, 1534 S. E. Oak street. Sgt Eitelman a ,member. of the 82d
airborne division and a veteran of the European theatre with over 100
points, was only recently promoted to sergeant.
He is a veteran of the Sicily, Italy, Normandy, Holland, Ardennes
and central European campaigns, during which he was wounded four times.
He holds the purple heart with three oak leaf clusters.
As leader of a patrol behind enemy lines during the German
counteroffensive toward Liege and Antwerp he is credited with twice making
possible the escape of the remainder of his group back to their own lines
after successfully obtaining information of the location and strength of the
enemy units facing his battalion.
On D-Day he and ten others were credited with holding a small
beachhead town all by themselves
. At present, Sgt Eitelman, former employee of the Columbia Distributing
Company, is in France.
