AWARD OF THE SILVER STAR
TO SGT JOSEPH P. GUZZY
For Gallantry In Action 18 September 1944

GENERAL ORDERS: Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 138 (1945)

CITATION: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Joseph P. Guzzy (ASN: 33598654), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 26 December 1944, at Erria, Belgium.

When his company was attacked at night by overwhelming numbers of SS Troops supported by strafing planes, mortar and Panzerfaust fire, Sergeant Guzzy took over a machine gun single-handedly when its crew was killed.

While the enemy troops were crawling on the positions under intense fire, Sergeant Guzzy carried the gun from position to position and fired bursts at all likely targets. He persisted in these tactics throughout a three hour battle, most of which time he was exposed directly to small arms, mortar and Panzerfaust fire. Sergeant Guzzy's courageous initiative and indifference to enemy action was an inspiration to his comrades and a material contribution to the defeat and killing of more than fifty of the enemy in this engagement. His conduct reflects the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
