I -- AWARD OF THE SILVER STAR MEDAL

GEORGE F. MCGRATH, 11116629, Private First Class, 508TH Parachute Infantry.  For gallantry in action on 7 January 1945 near *** BELGIUM.  Private First Class MCGRATH, Scout and BAR Gunner,  advanced toward the enemy machine gun which was holding up the left flank of the attacking company.  He encountered two enemy riflemen, killed them and continued on toward the gun.  Nearing the position, Private First Class MCGRATH leaped to his feet, charged, firing his BAR and wiped out the position.  By his gallant actions, Private First Class MCGRATH enabled his company to continue towards its objective without further delay or additional casualties.  His bravery reflects great credit upon himself and the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.  Entered military service from BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
