AWARD OF THE SILVER STAR
TO PFC ALBERT M. RUTTINGER
For Gallantry In Action 18 September 1944

GO No 60 Hq 82d AB Div APO 469 U A Army 30 Nov '44 (cont'd)
ALBERT M. RUTTINGER, 37529824, Private First Class, 508TH Parachute Infantry.
For gallantry in action on 18 September 1944 at *** Bridge, HOLLAND.  Private First Class RUTTINGER, Company "G", 508TH Parachute Infantry, displayed great courage and initiative in destroying  one German Artillery piece and two enemy ammunition dumps.  His company attacked through the eastern portion of *** HOLLAND, and attempted to establish a bridgehead about the southern approaches of the bridge over the WAAL River.  This company met stubborn resistance from German strongpoints established in the houses of the town.  When the attack had moved to within 300 yards of the objective, a German 88mm gun firing from a roadblock, pinned down the company and threatened to block the attack.  Private First Class RUTTINGER moved forward until he was within 20 yards of the enemy position.  With rifle grenades he killed four of the German crew and destroyed the gun, causing the roadblock to become less effective.  While the enemy brought small arms and machine gun fire upon him at almost point-blank range, he remained in position and fired grenades which destroyed two ammunition dumps near the roadblock. The destruction of this ammunition eliminated all 88mm fire from this position, and contributed materially to the successful completion of his company's mission. Entered military service from KANSAS.
