BATTERY! C.
Lenton Sartain and the Airborne GIs of the 319th Glider Field Artillery,
by Joseph S. Covais
BATTERY! is the story of "A" Battery, 319th Glider Field Artillery
Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division. The 319th was with the 82nd in every
campaign from North Africa to the occupation of Berlin and is believed
to be the most highly decorated field artillery unit of the war. Though
it is most closely associated with the 508th Parachute Infantry
Regiment, the 319th also served with and closely supported the 504th,
505th, 507th PIR as well as the 325th Glider infantry.
The book is based on in-depth interviews conducted by the author with
twenty surviving members of this unit, and is centered on the
perspective of their charismatic Battery Commander, Captain Charles
Lenton Sartain of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Using his background in
clinical psychology Covais helped the veterans to talk about their
experiences in a candid, direct manner, relating many sensitive and
controversial aspects of their service previously left unspoken. Over
175 never before published photographs accent the book - many taken
under combat conditions, depicting battle field scenes, camp life, and
the individuals featured in the story. Maps of military operations
produced expressly for BATTERY! enhance the narrative. 585 pages.
