Line of Effort #1: “Fight Tonight”.

1. Marksmanship.

1-508th PIR hosted the AASAIC (Marksmanship U) from 18 December 2017 – 05 January 2018. The first week consisted of class room instruction on learning theory, instructional methodology, ballistics, effects of weather, optics, lasers, training aids and PMI&E of the M9 and M4. We also covered the training path to individual qualification. Week two focused on hands on dry fire drills, firing positions and an orientation to the engagement skills trainer (EST). Week three was range week.

The Battalion's Marksmanship University trained 19 NCOs providing company level technical experts able to plan, resource, and train Paratroopers on the M4, M9 weapons systems. The companies will rely heavily on these newly minted SMEs in the coming weeks in known distance, qualification, and advanced rifle marksmanship ranges during the Battalion's Range Density week (22-26 January 2018).

2. Physical Fitness.

The Battalion’s Ranger Physical Fitness Program continues to build the Fury Team as our Paratroopers set the example for the initial physical rigors of SURT and Ranger School. On average, the Bravo Company trainers receive 7-15 Fury Paratroopers each day and conduct training in line with the “Big 5” of RAP Week. Since inception, we have had one (1) Ranger School graduate, one (1) Paratrooper in Florida, one (1) Paratrooper in Darby, and four (4) Paratroopers currently at SURT and two (2) in the “Big 5” retest.

3. Medical Skills.

The 1-508 PIR Medical Platoon, working with the Brigade Surgeon, surged on smallpox vaccinations this week. 1-508 Medics immunized 472 Paratroopers in order to enhance the readiness of the GRB 1.

CLS Qualified- 348 PAX

CLS+ Qualified- 218 PAX

The next CLS + Certification Course is scheduled for 16-19 January.

4. Communication.

The battalion S6 completed the transition of all of the BNs computers to the Windows 10 operating system.

1-508 PIR conducted HF (PRC-150) radio training for all company communication representatives and senior RTOs (14x Paratroopers) from 08-11 January 2018. The training was held at the Fort Bragg Digital Training Center and taught by a retired 25U from the 82nd ABN DIV. The course covered basic to advanced HF operation and troubleshooting. The HF radio is a key piece of mission-critical equipment that provides secure and reliable beyond line of sight communication for forward-deployed forces in satellite denied and remote environments. This training greatly improved our mission command and battlefield lethality.

5. Small Unit Tactics.

1-508 PIR conducted a Team Leader University 03-05 January 2018. The training kicked off with an Air Assault of all current and future Team Leaders into NTA 5, where they received round robin training on small unit tactics, squad operations, operations orders, patrol bases, and other team and squad level duties and responsibilities.

6. Mastery of Maintenance.

1-508 PIR continued operations to improve our understanding of maintenance systems and logistics in accordance with the division and brigade priorities for maintenance focused training. We completed all possible division internal lateral transfers, only waiting for the 223rd QM to come on-line next month to finalize our last transaction. Additionally, one external lateral transfer, and 17 turn-ins were also completed prior to maintenance week. This left the battalion with 42/47 complete DST lateral transfer/turn in directives.

With the help of the BSB and SPO maintenance, SPC Arocho (our only NVG maintainer in the battalion), was able to repair 30 sets of night vision devices in 4 days. He personally reduced our parts-on-hand-not-installed to zero in a one-week period.

Division conducted a sling-set inspection on 11 January that validated the battalion’s 67 sling sets. 51 of these are fully mission capable.

While companies reduced excess/broken equipment across the battalion, the maintenance platoon executed 91 services including five scheduled services, one company's worth of quarterly weapons services, and one company of NVG semi-annual services. This resulted in the 1-508 PIR maintaining zero overdue services. Additionally, The Shop Office section turned in $3,303 worth of credit on our ORIL report. Finally, maintainers, as a collective, completed over 225 direct labor man hours across scheduled and unscheduled services and 108 hours of maintenance focus training during half-day schedules in preparation for maintenance week.

7. Airborne Proficiency.

1-508 PIR continues to seize the initiative and get ahead of “x3” and pay loss Paratroopers. On 09 January 2018, 31 Fury Paratroopers exited the aircraft. 3x Fury Vehicles are being rigged in preparation for drop on 19JAN and 22JAN as part of Battalion Mass Tactical Week. This will provide our Paratroopers the opportunity to de-rig vehicles on the drop zone and improve our mission readiness as the GRB 1.

The Fury Air Team conducted an investigation on an incidents resulting in jettisoned equipment on 14 December 2017. We plan on presenting the findings and discussing a way forward in order to educate leaders and Jump Masters across the formation at the BN JM Breakfast on 29 January 2018.

8. Live Fire Exercise.

1-508 PIR conducted initial planning for off-post live fire training to AP Hill in March. This training will include squad live fire exercises, MOUT, and sub-terrainean training. Additionally, we conducted initial planning for Delta Company Gunnery progression and live fire exercises scheduled for March.

The Mortar platoon began their MORTEP training glide path by conducting MORTEP Tables I-III which included written exams, dry fire, misfire, and adjust fire drills. The Mortar platoon also received the STORM laser ranging system this week to be implemented into future training, improving the range accuracy and response time between CFF and rounds down range.

NEXT TWO WEEKS

Over the next two weeks 1-508 will complete maintenance training tasks, outline our training strategy during the 3rd Brigade Semi-Annual Training Brief, increase medical proficiency with continued CLS (+) training, crush the competition in the Janney Cup and increase paratrooper lethality through the execution of final MORTEP tables and marksmanship density ranges.
