Grave marker for Bob H. Abernathy in Greenlawn Cemetery,  Columbus (Cherokee county) Kansas.

Bob enlisted in the Army at Tulsa, OK on 20 October 1942.

Pvt Abernathy was initially listed as missing in action on 7 June 1944 but his status was changed on 27 June 1944 to absent sick in an unknown hospital due to being injured in action.

On 14 August he returned to the Company and classed as a battle casualty.

Although his name does not appear on the National Archive POW database, he was apparently held captive while missing during the Normandy campaign .  On 27 July 1945, Pfc Abernathy was listed as one of 31 ex-POWs sent home early based on the points system.
