James C. Appleby, 58, Oakville, died Saturday at Ball Hospital following a three-month illness. He was a native of Albany, Ky., moved to Shelbyville in 1937 and came to Delaware County in 1945.
Mr. Appleby served with the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II.
He formerly worked for H.J. Greene Co. and Halteman Homes and presently owned and operated Jim's Plumbing Service.
Survivors include his wife, Antha; two daughters, Linda Jones, Springport, and Carolyn Mills, Oakville; one son, Michael L. Appleby, Muncie; two brothers, Travis and Sherman Appleby, both of Albany, Ky.; one sister, Hazel Cummings, Albany, Ky.; and two grandsons.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Meeks Mortuary with Rev. Wes Ellis, pastor of Oakville Brethren Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Springport Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Monday and prior to services Tuesday. |

James enlisted Army at Indianapolis, Indiana on 6
September 1943.
After earning his parachutist badge he was shipped to
the 11th Replacement Depot in England. On 10 August 1944 he was
transferred to Company B, 508th PIR.
Pfc Appleby was wounded in action on 13 October 1944
(Friday the 13th!). He was evacuated to a field hospital and did
not return to the regiment.
Pfc Appleby was awarded the Purple Heart and the
Bronze Service Arrowhead device for the Holland campaign and Airborne
operations. |
