John enlisted in the Army at Ft Niagara, Youngstown, NY on 12 January 1942.

Pvt Appleton volunteered for parachutist duty and was assigned to the 507th PIR.  On 16 October 1942 he was one of the cadre team transferred to the newly activated 508th PIR at Camp Blanding, FL.,

By February 1943 he attained the rank of Sergeant but disappeared from the 508th Morning Reports.  It is presumed that he was again transferred.

Veterans Administration records show that he was discharged on 11 November 1945.
