WILLIAM D. ARBOGAST

THE DALLES - William "Bill" Arbogast, 85, of Dale died Friday, March 5, 2010, at a care facility in The Dalles following a long illness. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 10 at Olney Cemetery in Pendleton.

Mr. Arbogast was born Aug. 26, 1924, in Ritter to Elmer L. and Hazel (Balance) Arbogast. He was raised in the Ritter/Dale area and attended school in Dale. He worked on his father's farm after school and evenings, tending cattle and raising grain and hay. He also broke horses for riding and driving. In 1943, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the Army and served his country during World War II. He was honorably discharged from service in April of 1946.

He married Charlotte "Bobbie" Curtis in 1946 in Walla Walla. They then moved to Dale, where they raised two daughters and owned and operated the Dale Store/Bill's Garage and Saw Shop.

Mr. Arbogast is survived by daughters Dusty Harris of Dale and Carol Arbogast of Portland; sister Lila Mitchell of Hood River; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Bobbie Arbogast, in 1989; parents Elmer and Hazel Arbogast; and brothers Norman "Skinny" Arbogast and Leonard "Tuffy" Arbogast.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Long Creek Ambulance Fund in care of Burns Mortuary of Pendleton, P.O. Box 489, Pendleton, OR 97801. Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of arrangements.

William enlisted in the Army at Spokane, WA on 24 March 1943.

On 21 July 1944 Pfc Arbogast was assigned to Service Company, 508th PIR but was hospitalized at the time.

Pfc Arbogast was placed on duty status on 18 September 1944 but was transferred to a hospital at APO 152.  He did not return to the regiment.
