John enlisted in the Army
on October 29. 1943 in Camden, New Jersey and volunteered for
parachutist duty. After completion of jump school he was shipped
overseas.
On August 10, 1944
transferred from the 11th Replacement Depot to Company B, 508th PIR as
one of the many replacements for losses incurred in Normandy.
He was awarded the Bronze
Service Arrowhead for his participation in Holland during Operation
Market-Garden. John also was in the Battle of the Bulge and was
wounded in action on February 1, 1945. His wounds were severe enough to
warrant lengthy hospitalization and he was later transferred to the
U.S. for further treatment on May 31,1945.
John remained in the
service and attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. |
