ROBERT ASHER

Robert Asher, 83, of Winter Haven, died of progressive supranuclear palsey on Saturday, October 8, 2005, at Spring Lake Nursing Home.

A native of Hector, Ken., he came to the area in 1957.

He was a general foods quality control inspector for 28 years. He was a U.S. Army paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne during World War II.

He was in the Normandy invasion and was a prisoner of war. He was a member of the Imperial Chapter of Ex-Prisoners of War in Lakeland. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where he was an usher and served on the breakfast committee.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Barbara Ann Asher of Winter Haven; a brother, Chris Asher of Lakeland; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winter Haven. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Internment will be at Lakeside Memorial Park in Winter Haven.

Donations may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Grave marker for Robert Asher in the Lakeside Memorial Park, Winter Haven (Polk county), Florida.

Robert enlisted in the Army at Cincinnati, OH on 4 November 1942.

A member of Company A, 58gh PIR, Pfc Asher jumped into Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944.  He was taken prisoner five days later and was released from Stalag 4B about a year later.
