Death certificate and grave marker
for Charles W. Ball in Plot M, 2112 in the Golden Gate National
Cemetery, San Bruno (San Mateo county), California.
Charles enlisted in the Army at
Clarksburg, WV on 12 August 1943.
Pfc Ball was transferred to Company
G, 508th from Hq the 19th Field Force Replacement Depot on 28 May 1944.
He was awarded the Bronze Service Arrowhead device for
participation in Normandy assault.
Pfc Ball was appointed to the grade
of Corporal on 2 February 1945 and, according to his grave marker
inscription, later was elevated to the rank of Staff Sergeant.
At the time of his death Charles was
working as a chef in Martinez, CA about 35 miles from the location given
as his normal residence and where his wife was living. The death
certificate stated a planned cremation with interment in Woodlawn
Memorial Park, Colma, CA but perhaps the prospect of a no-cost burial in
the national cemetery caused plans to be changed. |
