MARCUS L. BAXLEY

Grave marker for Marcus Lee Baxley in Peters Creek Baptist Church Cemetery (Cumberland country). North Carolina.

Note that the inscription documents service in the US Navy, US Army and US Air Force.  He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant (E-8).

Marcus enlisted in the Navy, perhaps after attaining the age of 17 in December 1944. These three quarterly ship's muster rolls (August and October 1945, and January 1946) indicate he began serving on the LST 951 on 23 August 1945 when he was 17 years and 8 months of age,  At that time the ship was deployed in the western Pacific and he was rated as a Signalman 1st Class

After leaving the Navy, and now 18, Marcus registered for the draft in Fayetteville, NC on 6 May 1946.  His date of induction into the Army is not known.

On 7 July 1956, SFC Baxley and his German-born wife, Erika, were listed on the manifest for a MATS flight from Germany to Maguire AFB, NJ.

Erika unsuccessfully petitioned to become a naturalized U.S. citizen in the District Court at Bowling Green, KY.  Her petition was denied on 23 May 1962.

At some point following this stint with the 508th ARCT at Fort Campbell. KY, Marcus shed his Army uniform for that of the Air Force. His date of retirement is not known.
