WALTER W. BENSON

BENSON Walter W., 64, of Boca Raton, formerly of Boston, died Saturday. Retired city of Boston Police Officer. Member of the American LegIon and D.A.V. Navy Yard Chapter 17 of Boston. Member of Boston Police Relief Association. Served In 82nd Alrbourne [sic] and recipient of Bronze Star and Purple Heart.  Survived by his wife, Sophie L. (Dolly) Benson, 6 children, Judith L. Cerone of Braintree, Ma, Marlon E. Whiffln of Quincy, Walter W. Benson, Jr. of Wilmington, MA., Brian E. Benson of Florida City, Fl., Donna M. Vega of West Point, N.Y., Beverly J. Kelly of Stoughton, one sister, Marlon Barrett of Med field. Mass, 8 grandchildren. Wake service 8 p.m. Tuesday. Bablone Funeral Home, Boca Raton, Fl. Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Wednesday, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Boca Raton, Fl.

Walter registered for the draft in East Boston, Massachusetts on 16 October 1940 and was inducted intro the Army at Boston, MA on 16 January 1941.

.Pvt Benson was transferred from Hq Field Force Replacement Depot to Company D, 508th PIR on 27 May 1944.

On 14 July 1944 Pvt Benson was hospitalized as a non-battle casualty.

On 8 August 1944 he was released from assignment to the 508th

He was then transferred from the Detachment of Patients at the 53rd General Hospital, Malvern Wells, UK to the Parachute Replacement Regiment at The Parachute School, Fort Benning,, GA on 24 Aug 44 and in this instance was registered as a battle casualty.

He was  discharged from the Army on 6 November 1944.
