Norville E. Bowles, USAF Master Sgt., Retired of Bainbridge died on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at Hospice of Lancaster County, Mount Joy facility at the age of 77. Fondly known throughout his life as 'Sook', he was the husband of the late Hilde Bihler Bowles who died in 1975.

Sook graduated from the former East Donegal High School and enlisted in the US Army, 27th Infantry Regiment, and Parachute Brigade in 1950. He served in Korea and received 3 bronze stars and a Purple Heart for injuries he received in combat. He later reenlisted with the US Air Force and began a 20-year career, retiring in 1972 as Master Sergeant. His experience in the USAF led to his employment at Three Mile Island, and later at Harrisburg International Airport where he was responsible for refueling airplanes and aircraft exterior maintenance until his retirement in 1986. During his years with the US Air Force, he lived extensively throughout the US and Germany, moving back to Lancaster Co. in 1972.

Sook was a member of the Bainbridge and Marietta American Legion posts, the Elizabethtown VFW, and Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Association. He also belonged to the Moose Lodge of Elizabethtown and the Susquehanna Beneficial Club of Marietta. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed daily crossword puzzles, and working on his computer.

Born in Conoy Twp., on January 19, 1932, he was the son of the late Aubrey L., and Mary E. Matheny Bowles. He was baptized in the Lutheran Faith.

Sook will be missed by his three daughters; Carol I. Bowles of Elizabethtown; Mary E. Coolidge of Mount Joy; and Patty C. married to Gene Hess of Mountville; 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Four brothers, Dick, Junie, Red, and Clifford Bowles predeceased him.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of his family. Interment will take place in the Bainbridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lebanon VA Medical Center Hospice Unit, 1700 South Lincoln Ave., Lebanon PA, 17042 or to Hospice of Lancaster Co., P.O.
