Grave marker for Claude E. and Miriam Brown in Greenwood
Cemetery, Cedar Falls (Black Hawk county), Iowa.
Claude first enlisted in the Army on 4 June 1937 and
he was discharged on 3 June 1940. He re-enlisted at Fort Snelling, MN on 21
December 1940.
Note that his bonus application, below, indicates
that he was in foreign service on three occasions: 3 July 1941
to 12 December 1942; 6 February 1943 to 20 August 1943 and 21
April 1944 to 3 September 1945. While the4 latter period was
in the ETO, it is not known where his first two deployments took
him.
On 13 February 1945, Pvt Brown was transferred to
Company E, 508th PIR from the 551st PIB after that unit was inactivated
on 27 January, 1945.
He was last discharged on 3 September 1945, probably at
Fort Snelling, MN.
This updated draft record was completed on 4 September
1945, the day after Claude was discharged.
This application for the Iowa WWII Veterans Bonus
was completed by Claude on 4 May 1949. His service qualified him
to receive the full $500 bonus award.
His military decorations include the Bronze Service Arrowhead device
for the Southern France Campaign and Airborne Operations.
