Thomas enlisted in the Army on March 5, 1941 in Waukegan, IL and later volunteered for parachutist duty.  He was transferred to Company D, 508th PIR from the 11th Replacement Depot on August 8, 1944 as one of many replacements for Normandy losses.

He received the Bronze Service Arrowhead device for the Holland campaign and Airborne operations.
