Johnnie served in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy, for a combined total of 20 years. He retired in 1976.

Johnnie's army service was as a parachutist. He was a member of Company G, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was stationed at Camp Chickamauga, Japan in 1955 and later at Fort Campbell during 1955-56.

After his retirement he lived in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
