John enlisted in the Army at New York City, NY on 28 November 1942 and volunteered for parachutist duty.

Om 16 December 1942 Pvt Delury was transferred from Camp Toccoa, GA to H company, 508th PIR.

Pvt DeLury was reported as missing in action as of 6 June 1944 but rejoined his company 5 days later.

He was discharged on 1 November 1945.

John's WWII service was recognized by the State of New York on 10 June 1981 when he was awarded the state's Conspicuous Service Medal.
