MELVIN DENTON

(courtesy of  Karen Nance)

Grave marker for Melvin Denton in the Lynnville Cemetery, Lynnville (Warrick county), Indiana.

Melvin enlisted at Ft Benjamin Harrison, IN on 21 August 1940. After completion of basic training and jump school, SSgt Denton was transferred from the 507th PIR to Company A, 508th as a member of the cadre team.  A month later he was appointed as 1st Sergeant for the company.

His promising career was cut short when he suffered a shattered wrist due to a bad landing during a practice jump.  The wrist was repaired with a piece of bone taken from his leg but meant that he would never be able to bend the wrist again.

On 12 October 1943 he was given a certificate of disability discharge at the Lawson General Hospital, Atlanta, GA.
