JOHN A., SR. 68, of North Fayette
Twp., died Saturday, October 31, 2009. Cherished husband of Helen
(Kubalek) DeSantis; loving father of Paul (Janice) Kowal, Janet (Edward)
Schaldenbrand and John A. DeSantis, Jr; beloved brother of Tony, James
and George DeSantis, and Mary and Edith Compart; cherished grandfather
of four and great-grandfather of five. Deceased is a daughter,
Frances DeSantis Bravo; two brothers Louis and Harry DeSantis; and a
sister, Nina Spiotta. Family will receive friends Tuesday,
November 3, 2009, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Wharton-Merrick Funeral Home,
951 Cliff Mine Road, Imperial, PA 15126. A Mass of Christian
burial will be celebrated Wednesday, November 4, 2009, t 10 am in St.
Columbkill R.C. Church. Interment will follow in St. Columbkill
Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St.
Columbkill Church, 103 Church Rd, Imperial, PA 15126 or Asera Care

John enlisted in the Army at Cumberland, PA on 27 March 1942.
The date of his arrival in the 508th does not appear on available
records but on 17 December 1944 Pfc DeSantis was transferred from Co H
to Service Company. On 13 January 1945 he was transferred from
Service Company to Company G. On or about 24 January 1945 Pfc DeSantis
was wounded in action and evacuated, He returned to the company on 6
March 1945. His military decorations include the Purple Heart and the
Combat Infantryman Badge for action during the campaign, 18 Dec 1944 to
20 Feb 1945.
On 17 January 1950, John submitted this application for the Pennsylvania
WWII Veterans Bonus. He was credited with 29 months of
domestic duty and 16 months of foreign service yielding a bonus payment
of the full $500 bonus. |
