Shell Explodes During
Drill at Fort Benning,
Five Soldiers Wounded

   FT. BENNING. Ga. (U.P) ---A 105 . millimeter artillery shell struck a tree and exploded during a drill with live ammunition late Friday, wounding five soldiers, two of them seriously.
   Second Lt Donald D. Dyell. Detroit, was listed In "critical" condition with chest injuries and 1st Lt Richard Steinquist, 20, Los Angeles, his left arm amputated by the explosion, was reported In "satisfactory condition."
   Base officials said the men were engaged in a military training problem with live ammunition being fired over their heads when one of the shells struck the tree and exploded Instantly.
   One of the injured was Capt Herman V. Dow, son of Mrs. Dora C. Dow, Lincoln, Neb, minor head. Injuries.

Born in Silber Centre, Ontario, Canada, Donald entered the United States at Detroit, MI on 27 September 1927 at the age of 2 along with his mother and 2 sisters.  Their destination was Flint, MI where his father Max was employed.

Donald registered for the draft in Detroit, MI on 20 January 1943.

Despite being critically wounded by an exploding artillery shell in 1953, Donald survived and retired from the service as a Lt. Colonel.
