Carl registered for the draft registered for the draft at Minneapolis, Minnesota. on 16 October 194o and was inducted  into the Army at Fort Snelling, MN on  28 February 1942.

Pvt Ehrmantraut's date of arrival in service Company, 508th is unknown as that company's 19442 morning reports for arrival are unavailable.

His sole appearance in 508th records occurred on 16 August 1943 when Pfc Ehrmantraut was trancferred from Service Company to the 541st Prcht PIR, Fort Benning, GA.

Carl died in the Womack Army Hospital, Fort Bragg (Cumberland), NC, on 29 October 1984 due to respiratory failure brought on by lung cancer.

His was interred in Hillside Cemetery, Laurinburg (Scotland), NC
