WILLIAM E. EKMAN

Grave marker for William E. Ekman in the United States Military Academy Post Cemetery, West Point (Orange county), New York.

William served as a Private in 2nd Bn, 29th Infantry Division from 1 July 1931 thru 30 June 1933.

On 1 July 1933 Pvt Ekman was transferred to Battery I, 64th Coastal Artillery where he served until 1 July 1934.

On 2 July 1934 he entered the West Point Military Academy, graduating on 14 June 1938 and being commissioned as a 2nd Lt.

Major Ekman was a member of the cadre team transferred from the 507th PIR to the 508th PIR on 16 October 1942.

He was promoted to Lt.. Colonel on 20 November 1942.

Beginning on 7 January 1943 he assumed temporary command of the 508th on multiple occasions during absences of Lt. Col. Lindquist.  He also relieved Lt. Col. Harry Harrison as  Acting Regimental Commander in one instance.

On 19 December 1943 Lt. Col Ekman was the regimental executive office when the unit as deployed overseas.  on 31 March 1944 he was transferred to take command of the 505th PIR.

He was a Brigadier General when he retired.
