JOE L. FARISH

Joseph [sic] Long Farish, 84, formerly of 108 Crestview Drive, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 13,2009, at Peachtree Centre.
   Born in Gaffney, he was the widower of Ruth Fitzgerald Farish and son of the late Jacob Lavelle Farish and Jessie Ellis Farish. He was former coowner/ operator of Farish Moving & Storage, Gaffney Monument Works and Farish Real Estate.
   Mr. Farish was a Mason and Shriner and a member of the Elks Club and VFW. He was a decorated World War II Army 82nd Airborne veteran and a member of Buford Street United Methodist Church.
   He is survived by two sons, Gregory Steven Farish and wife, Ramona, of Charlotte, N.C., and Victor Lavelle Farish and wife, Cathy, of Leesburg, Va.; four grandchildren, Blythe Fitzgerald Farish, Gregory Steven Farish Jr., Andrew William Farish and Victoria Catherine Farish; a brother, O.C. Farish and wife, Barbara, of Gaffney; and a sister, Ada Mae Sims of Gaffiiey. He was preceded in death by a son and a sister, Kate Smith.
   The family will receive friends Friday, May 15, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Blakely Funeral Home. Graveside services will immediately follow at 11 a.m. at Oakland Cemetery with the Rev. Joseph James officiating.
   Memorials may be made to Buford Street United Methodist Church Building Fund, 120 E. Buford Street, Gaffney, SC 29340. Family members are at their respective homes.

Grave marker for Joe L. Farish in the Oakland Cemetery, Gaffney (Cherokee county), South Carolina.

Joe enlisted in the Army at Camp Croft, SC 22 July 1943 and completed basic training and jump school before being shipped overseas.

Pvt Farish was transferred from the 11th Replacement Depot to Hq 2nd, 508th on 10 August 1944.  He subsequently parachuted into the area of Nijmegen, Holland on 17 September 1944.  He received the Bronze Service Arrowhead device foe his participation in the Holland campaign and Airborne operations.

Pvt Farish was transferred to the 82nd Airborne Division on 9 April 1945.
