On 23 January 1943, Pvt Ferguson was transferred from the Reception Center. Fort George G Meade, MD to Hq 3rd, 508th PIR.

Pfc Ferguson was appointed to the grade of T/5 on 7 April 1944 and then promoted to the grade of T/4 as of 21 July 1944.

Based on the grave marker inscription he was further promoted one grade to Staff Sergeant.
