GAGARINE,
ALEXIS M., 78, of Gulfport, died Thursday (Jan. 13, 1994) at VA
Medical Center at Bay Pines. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, he came
here in 1978 from Hagerstown, Md. He retired in 1969 as an Army colonel
with 29 years of service. He was a member of St. Andrew Russian Orthodox
Church of Gulfport. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Tatiana; a
son, Michael, Hagerstown; a daughter, Eleana Shipman, Lancaster, Pa.; a
brother, Dmitry, Fort Pierce; and two grandsons, Michael and Mathew
Shipman. Gulfport Memorial Funeral Home, Gulfport.

Alexis,
born in what was then Petropavlovsk, now St. Petersburg, Russia, sailed
from Havre (Le Havre] on 22 October 1933 arriving in Quebec on the 29th
of the month. Note that his family contacts include his Uncle Prince
Alexander Gagarine in France and his mother Princess Princess Maria
Gagarine in Warrenton, VA which is his final destination.
On 5 May 1934 Alexis
declared his intent to apply to become a naturalized citizen of the
United States. His petition was later granted by the Circuit
Court, Roanoke, VA on 1 January 1940.
Meanwhile, Alexis enlisted
in Hq Battery 52 Coastal Artillery on 1 July 1935 and was discharged on
30 June 1936.
On 31 May 1940, Alexis
graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute wit BS degree and was
commissioned as a 2nd Lt. through the school's ROTC program.
On 6 June 1940 this
announcement of Alexius being engaged to Tatiana Vassilieff of
Rockville, MD appeared in the Baltimore Sun. The actual date oif their
marriage is unknown but it endured and the couple traveled a great deal
as Alexis served his adopted country. |
On
23 June 1948 Alexis and Tatiana arrived in New York, NY aboard the SS
President Monroe after sailing from Cairo, Egypt 20 days earlier.
The ship had been launched on 7 August 1940 and was commandeered to
serve in the U.S. Navy designated as AP-104 during WWII, The ship was
returned to American President Lines for commercial service on 21
February 1947 after having been refurbished.
The Gagarines left New York, NY aboard the SS
Excalibur on 8 August 1950 bound for Beirut, Lebanon. for a one-year
tour of duty.

On 20 June 1962 Alexis and
Tatiana were admitted to national territory of Brazil on a permanent
basis, confusing terminology since they were undoubtedly under orders
and would not remain in Brazil indefinitely
Alexis retired from the
Army as a full colonel. on 30 June 1966.
