GREENSBURG, Pa, Nov 19 --- Fayette County draft Boards
Nos 1 and 4 furnished the majority of the selectees into into the armed
forces at the local induction center. They are:

Following the war, William applied for the Pennsylvania
Veterans Bonus and was credited for 9 months of domestic service as well
as 13 months of overseas duty. He was awarded $285.00 as a consequence. |
William D. Garletts enlisted in the Army at Greensburg, PA
on 18 November 1943 [see article at left published the following day].
Pvt Garletts was transferred from the 11th Replacement
Depot to Company A, 508th PIR on 10 August 1944 as the regiment was
rebuilding following the Normandy Campaign.
He was promoted to Pfc on 22 January 1945.
on 31 January 1945 Pfc Garletts was listed as slightly
injured in action and evacuated to a fiels hospital. He returned
to duty on 28 February 1945.
His military decorations include the bronze Service
Arrowhead device awarded for the Holland campaign and Airborne
operations. |
