ROBERT E. GIBBY


HEROES OF BASTOGNE

... An army announcement giving more details of the 101st Airborne Division's part in the battle of the bulge today lists eight Sacramento and Superior California soldiers among the participants in the historical action at Bastogne.
    They are: Private Lawrence J Zorn, 5310 Santa Maria Avenue, Private Leland F. Parker, Private First Class Ellis E. Brown, all of Sacramento; Private Charles W. Kalyja, 2635 Eight Sreet, North Sacramento, Private William T. Wongett, Staff Sergeant Robert E. Gibby, both ogf Roseville, Placer county; Major Clarence Hester, Red Bluff, Tehama county, and Corporal James M. Chronister, Preston, Sonoma county.

Robert enlisted in the Army at San Francisco, CA on 7 July 1942.

A parachutist volunteer Robert was assigned to Service Company, 508th PIR.

On 16 August 1943, Tec5 Gibby was transferred to the 541st PIR at Fort Benning, GA.  Gibby was to act as cadre to the new unit which had been activated four days earlier .
