James enlisted in the New York National Guard on 18 February 1941 and was assigned to Company G.  He was transferred to Company K on 10 June 1941 and promoted to Corporal twenty days later.
Cpl Green was elevated to sergeant on 13 January 1942 and then commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in Company K on 27 May 1942.  When he was promoted to 1st Lt on 18 August 1942 he was apparently back in Company G.

His National Guard service ended, however when James voluntarily enlisted in the Army at Buffalo, NY on 16 November 1942 and took on the rank of Private once again.

Sgt Green received a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1945
